Welcome to Eilat

The missile-launching corvette "Suffa" lies at a depth of about 25 metre. The ship was built in Cherbourg, France, for the Israel navy. The corvette was still in archor in the French port in October 1973 when, because of the outbreak of the Yom Kippur War, France declared an embargo on all Middle Eastern nations engaged in hostilities. The four ships, therefore, were supposed to stay in port; the sailors aboard then however managed to elude patrols and took the ships out of French territorial waters, breaking the embargo. "Suffa" was one of the first warships to pass through the Strait of Suez in 1979. In March of 1994, the "Suffa" made its last voyage, stopping just in Eilat, and the ship was sent to the bottom in order o create an interesting diving site.
